AI Agents Emerge as Crypto’s Last Line of Defense Against $3.4B Smart Contract Hacks
The crypto industry is turning to AI-powered auditors after a brutal 2025 saw $3.4 billion stolen through smart contract exploits. Three catastrophic breaches—including Bybit's record $1.4 billion hack—accounted for 70% of losses, exposing the limitations of human-led security reviews.
OpenAI has partnered with Paradigm and blockchain security firm OtterSec to test AI agents that scan live ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) environments. The initiative comes as decentralized protocols now manage over $100 billion in assets through bug-prone smart contracts.
Traditional audits have become economically unviable. 'You can't audit your way out of zero-day exploits,' says a developer at a top-20 DeFi protocol, noting that manual reviews cost upwards of $500,000 per contract while missing emergent attack vectors.
